Phonics and Reading
We place the highest emphasis on teaching our children to read. To enable us to have a consistent approach to the learning of phonics and reading, we have started to use a program called Read Write Inc. which is a proven phonics scheme. We have daily phonics for KS1 and Reception when they are grouped according to their ability following assessments. We regularly hold parent information meetings to explain how you can support your child at home. If you have missed this please contact the school office who will be happy to make an appointment for you to find out more about the scheme and how we can provide support or visit: http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents.
Once children have progressed through the Read, Write, Inc. they are ready to read independently and develop higher order reading skills. Teacher led guided reading sessions take place every day with children who are ready with an emphasis on the key skills - literal, deductive, inference and evaluative. We use a mixture of home readers plus our library to support a love of independent reading.
Spelling is taught discretely using the scheme of work produced by Helen Bell of Westover Green Community School, Bridgwater. This is based on the demands of the new curriculum (2014) and is delivered through a weekly spelling lesson and follow up work on a daily basis.
